Empress Hotel La Jolla

Pros: The staff were amazing and the location was excellent. Great value for money

Pros: The room was spacious and clean, we stayed as a family of 3 and had a great time. The staff we interacted with were great, friendly, polite and helpful. There was a huge choice at breakfast for 2 adults and a fussy child, overall a really great stay and a lovely hotel. We didn't use the restaurant downstairs mostly because we're vegetarian but did find a great vegan cafe just down the block for dinner.

Cons: Nothing at all to fault at the hotel, it was really great. I do wish I'd researched a bit more on the area- we were mostly sightseeing with a child but were quite a journey from the zoo and other locations we wanted to go to so a lot of our day was taken up with public transport (with a stop 2 blocks over this was easy enough though). Close to the cove and children's pool we got to enjoy a lot of la Jolla wildlife which made up for it, but I would probably choose somewhere more central if travelling with the aim of seeing the city and entertaining children. I appreciate this is not any fault of the hotel though and completely down to my own research, just a mention for anyone else in a similar situation to us.

Pros: The staff were absolutely lovely. Rooms were spacious, walking distance to restaurants and supermarket, breakfast was good and kids loved the complimentary cookies each day and they were delicious. Also the cold water at reception was very much appreciated too. Also the fact we could do some washing on site was great.

Cons: Gym was very small but still better than nothing.

Pros: Hotel employees were extremely kind and helpful. Room was very nice and clean. Free breakfast wasn't great but it was good with plenty of options. Great location.

Cons: Letting me know, up front, that parking on street was fine, and where to park. They could consider having shuttle from hotel, and could charge $10. I had to pay $60 for taxi

Pros: I was confused and very concerned when I got there because I paid in advance thru this booking company, and was sent an email receipt saying PAID IN FULL with a confirmation number but the hotel wanted to charge me again, they did not show I paid in full, they saw the reservation but did not care that I had a confirmation of having paid in full but I was there so I asked the manager on duty to please remember our conversation so if I got double charged, I could be refunded by either the hotel or booking company and he provided his business card to me.

Cons: I had zero complaints or concerns other than the concern I wrote above about.

Always love Empress. It’s our go to place whenever we’re in La Jolla
