Fantastic hotel - apart from the poor experience of arriving at the hotel and finding it locked.

Pros: Lovely historic hotel with a warm room and big comfortable bed. I loved it. You are staying in an original building so be prepared to go back in time as far as decor, furniture and especially bathroom are concered. But that's part of the fun! Modest breakfast of coffee and pastries taken in an original dining area. The location was excellent, right amongst the historic buildings in the area. Bars and dining opportunities nearly and a nice little hiking trail nearby for some early morning exercise. A short walk to the light rail station which takes you to 'downtown' within minutes.

Cons: Upon arrival, in the dark, tired after a seven hour bus ride, I found the hotel was completely locked up and though some lights were on there was no other signs of life. Obviously this was cause for concern. Another couple arrived and found a sign saying 'ring this number' - which went straight to answering machine. Not a good sign and I began thinking we had been scammed. Eventually the number was answered by a gentleman who was managing a nearby restaurant. He arrived soon after, unlocked the side gate and we were allowed in. Not exactly the 'warm welcome' you would hope for.

Brilliant experience

Pros: Dee who greeted us upon arrival was excellent, knowledgeable and friendly. The room we were allocated was amazing with a big copper roll top bath. Decor was great for age of hotel and extremely clean.

Cons: Nothing not to like!

Characterful gem

Pros: Dee was most welcoming and gave us lots of useful local information. Room and bed were very comfortable and we had a good nights rest. We did have the complimentary coffee and pastry the next morning which was much appreciated, thank you. We enjoyed reading the room reviews from previous guests which all gave more atmosphere and history. This is a historic gem and if you like that kind of thing then you will love this place - we did.

Cons: The charm of this hotel is that it is old and characterful. Don’t set your expectations for a TV or flashy decor or you will be disappointed. We really liked this place because it didn’t have those things.
